Emma Louise, singer and songwriter

Brisbane-born songstress Emma Louise is one of our proudest musical exports. Since being nominated for the 2011 J Award Unearthed artist of the year, Emma Louise’s star has risen exponentially, being named Best Female Artist at the 2013 ARIA Awards, earning a plaque on the Brunswick Street Mall alongside luminaries The Bee Gees, Powderfinger and Savage Garden, and has toured extensively in support of the likes of Sam Smith and Boy & Bear. In July Emma released Supercry, her second studio album following on from 2013’s vs Head vs Heart, and October will see Emma hit the road for a national tour in support. We caught up with Emma Louise to talk about the album, keeping sane on tour and her love of wine and cheese.

Your new record Supercry came out last month, how has the reception been to it so far?
It’s a bit hard to tell really! It feels strange that it’s out there, like it’s not mine anymore. I’m comforted by the positive feedback I’ve had though.

What would you say is the stylistic biggest change that fans of your first album would experience on this record?
The sounds are a lot different. This album might be a bit bolder.

How would you say you have grown as an artist since your previous album, vs Head vs Heart?
I think I’ve become a bit less hard on myself. I’ve taken a lot of pressure off myself and I’m not caring as much about what happens at the other end of the creative process – I’m more focusing on just creating.

You’ll be spending most of October on the road, touring Supercry around Australia – what are your tips for making travelling easy and killing time on the road?
Reading a good book is good. Having mad chats with the band. And exercise always makes touring a bit more level.

We saw on your Twitter feed that you are a bit of a food lover (eg. May 23 – “I love cheese so much”, and again on May 23 – “Fuck- I love cheese and I love wine”). We want to know – what’s your go-to comfort meal?
LOL! Cheese and wine are my guilty pleasures. And Chocolate!

Whose house would you most like to be invited to for a dinner party, and what dish would you bring?
I’m not really sure. I wouldn’t say no to anyone’s house for dinner! I’d bring whatever they wanted me to bring.

If you weren’t a professional musician, what career could you envision yourself wanting to embark upon?
Hmm, maybe a writer or something! Still something creative, I think.

What have you been finding inspiring lately?
I’ve been looking into other artist’s careers – that inspires me. To see how other people do the things that I also love to do.

Emma Louise’s Supercry national tour kicks off on Friday October 7 and will take in 13 dates across the country. Catch Emma Louise in Brisbane at The Triffid on Saturday October 22, or take a road-trip to the Gold Coast for her show at the Miami Marketta on Thursday October 20 or to Maroochydore for the show at Sol Bar on Friday October 21.
