Regulars to West End institution Lock’n’Load Bistro, will be chuffed to hear that owner Lachlan Bird has been tinkering away at a new beast at which to whet your appetite. Woolly Mammoth Alehouse is set north of the river in Fortitude Valley, filling the cavernous lodgings that once housed Mustang Bar on Ann Street and upstairs hideaway Coniston Lane. The beer hall has a slick new interior, courtesy of designer Alexander Lotersztain of Derlot – known for the eclectic fit-outs at Alfred & Constance, Kwan Brothers and Depo. Alexander has preserved the existing brickwork and cobblestone pillars of the original building, rounding out the space with hard lumber and modern fittings. A multi-purpose experiential space, Woolly Mammoth Alehouse brings together three pockets of play – the Alehouse downstairs, and Garden Bar and Mane Stage upstairs. The Garden Bar has been decked out with a sprightly palette and spongy astroturf for indoor bocce, giant jenga and shuffleboard, while the Mane Stage is a dimly lit loft that will host all manner of live music, comedy and burlesque. As for the grub, this new dive will plate up late-night rustic eats while 31 craft beers will rotate on tap, including drops from local brewers.
