The Matriarch

Fancy dining on Mediterranean tapas while surrounded by lush olive trees? You don’t have to jump on a plane – a secluded cocktail garden and restaurant in Newstead will quench your thirst for European hospitality. The Matriarch is the name of the luxe locale from Jimmy Truong of Brush and Barrel and chef Matthew De Wacht, who describe the concept as a romantic industrial cocktail-garden oasis. The Matriarch team has converted a warehouse on Masters Street into an indoor oasis – think Parisian countryside meets inner-city urban sanctuary and you’ve only just scratched the surface. Behind iron gates sits a garden patio (boasting a smattering of newly planted 25-year-old olive trees) while on the other side of ornate handcrafted doors sits an interior portion boasting white-marble tables, booth seating, soft velvet furnishings, crystal chandeliers and indoor foliage. The 250-seater venue offers diners a vegan and vegetarian-friendly menu of eats, including breakfast, lunch, high tea, an evening tapas selection and dessert delivered to your table by roving carts. The bar pours a selection of signature cocktails boasting a discernible pan-Asian influence (as well as a huge interactivity and theatrical component), alongside roughly 15 rosés and more.
