Space & Co.
Former food-truck hub and bar Welcome To Bowen Hills underwent an exciting evolution in 2021, which resulted in a new identity boasting an inclusive and creative focus. Space & Co. is a multifaceted venue that is expanding its offering to include visual art, live music and a brand-new food-and-drink range. Venue manager and musician Hannah Sands has taken the site in this new direction in response to a growing post-lockdown demand for more stimulating and interactive hospitality experiences. Hannah and her team overhauled the venue substantially, stripping back the previous iteration’s colour-heavy aesthetic to a more pared-back industrial-style foundation, with neutral tones serving to funnel attention to a plethora of eye-catching artworks coating the space. Space & Co. will boast several outdoor murals (MCRT Studio, Kayla Coombs, Brigid Holt and Isabelle Cowan are the artists giving the space colour for its launch) and an interior gallery wall showcasing work by various exhibiting artists. The venue’s performance area – adorned with vintage furniture to create a comfy living-room vibe – hosts intimate, stripped-back Tiny Desk-style gigs from an assortment of artists booked by local musician Hope D. Space & Co.’s bar has also been overhauled, incorporating a sizeable and evolving non-alcoholic selection that taps into a growing temperance movement with a range of booze-free cocktails. Space & Co.’s kitchen space – formerly home to Harry’s Pizza – is now helmed by the crew from Teneriffe craft beer and wine bar Zero Fox, which has brought across its popular menu of Korean and Japanese eats. Space & Co. operates with a welcoming and inclusive mindset, establishing a safe environment for all comers and a laid-back option for networking sessions, panel discussions and queer events.
