Small Axe certainly is small, but don’t let its size fool you. Nestled in front of The Stores West End, the coffee nook packs almost as much punch as its older sibling Blackstar Coffee. As with all Blackstar establishments, coffee is king here. Beans are brought in from the roastery, which has moved to Didsbury Street in East Brisbane, with the original house coffee Revolution Espresso being poured every day, alongside hot chocolates, chai, teas and Blackstar’s famed cold-pressed bottles. Small Axe caters predominantly to grab-and-go (in addition to drinks you can nab gluten-free treats and soon-to-launch takeaway breakfast dishes), it strongly encourages visitors to continue their coffee journey when they go home. Beans can be purchased by the take-home bag and ground on site, and you can also pick up an array of coffee paraphernalia. Making the most of the pokey space, Small Axe has built a loft above its schmick Tasmanian oak coffee counter, which will be home to cupping and coffee appreciation events, as well as coffee education sessions.
