Phatboys

Jorge Newbury has worked in many kitchens throughout his culinary career, honing his craft at the likes of ARIA Brisbane, Ribs and Rumps and Caxton Street Catering, though the idea of owning his own food truck that payed homage to Portugese cuisine was one that stuck with him throughout. Phatboys is that idea realised – a street food vendor that dispenses dishes influenced by Jorge’s upbringing amongst Johannesburg’s Madeiran community. This variety of soul food simple but flavoursome with four main dishes consisting of the likes of flame-grilled chicken, rump steak or chorizo, each accompanied by an algarve salad or batatas fritas (fries). Those wanting a meat-free option should opt for the fried milh – pan-fried polenta with salad and special sauce. Wherever possible, Phatboys’ ingredients are locally sourced with the meat from iconic butcher Meat at Billy’s in Ashgrove and the bread from Wildbreads.
