There’s been some activity on New Farm’s Brunswick Street recently, with the area welcoming several diverse new eateries. One of the most exciting arrivals is Thai restaurant Mekhong, which has brought a flavoursome mix of traditional and contemporary Thai dishes to the area. Owned and operated by savvy operators Joe and Deon, Mekhong is inspired by Joe’s upbringing and time spent living with his grandmother in Thailand during school holidays. After a few years working in various hospitality hotspots across Brisbane, Joe decided to channel his experiences and knowledge of Thai cuisine into his own restaurant. The duo secured and overhauled a spot in the heart of New Farm near the New Farm Cinemas, opening Mekhong in late 2018. Mekhong’s Esan-inspired dishes have been crafted from Joe’s grandmother’s recipes, given a modern overhaul but kept simple. Stand-out dishes include the homemade Mekhong rolls, vegetable and potato karri puffs, seafood keaw coco curry served in a whole young coconut, kang pad ped red curry with roasted duck, chicken pad see ew and the mango sticky rice with coconut cream. Diners can BYO, but we also suggest trying Mekhong’s traditional Thai drinks including herbal iced teas.
