Luckies Kitchen

Bulimba’s dining resurgence continued to gain momentum in 2022 with the arrival of Luckies Kitchen on Oxford Street. Nick Wigley and Tim Hearl are the two hospitality veterans behind the concept, which is described as a fun and approachable eatery delivering a playful take on Cantonese cuisine. The first seed of inspiration germinated during Nick’s time at Queen’s Chow Enmore, a Chinese eatery with a similarly high-spirited bent that partly informs Luckies’ atmosphere-forward and locals-centric service approach. TONIC Architecture + Design took the lead on the 70-seat venue’s aesthetic direction, honing in a lively visual personality achieved through the use of cool lighting and Shanghai-style wallpaper on the feature wall. While Cantonese is an anchoring inspiration of the menu, the kitchen team (helmed by Nick Tang, formerly of Southside) is eager to sidestep being pigeonholed by weaving in some salivation-worthy Southeast Asian influences. Expect the likes of black pepper wagyu, king mushrooms with roast bamboo, XO pipis with Chinese doughnut and cold bang bang noodle salad. The eatery is licensed, with a super-approachable wine list boasting a large contingent of Australian wines (including Granite Belt vino on tap available by the glass) available alongside Revel Brewing Co. beers and a range of cocktails fashioned with help from visionary bartender Michael Chiem of PS40.
