The were only open at California Lane natural-wine bar Queens for a short while before the crew behind the neon-lit nightspot opened its next project. In July the Fortitude Valley laneway welcomed Kings – a laid-back cocktail and dining garden that looks to be the tropical-inspired yang to Queens’ moody yin. Taking on the space previously occupied by The Stand, the Kings team has spruced up the open-air space, giving it a fresh look that is an amalgam of cyberpunk, lofi 1980s LA, and tropical themes. The existing bar has been extended to better cater for King’s bar offering, which will focus more heavily on cocktails. Guests can sip their way through a dedicated margarita menu alongside a slimmed down range of natural wines. Food also features, with a neighbouring commercial kitchen space used to serve a selection of tacos and po’ boys. Commercial Road Public Bar’s beloved drag shows have scored a new home at Kings, too, with the stage utilised for monthly performances alongside gigs for small bands, electronic artists and DJs. Entry to the venue is via Queens and California Lane.
