Kasina in Morningside showcases the gastronomic delights of Balkan cuisine, namely the fare from ex-Yugoslavian countries such as Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia. The restaurant is the brainchild of Dragan and Marija Sestic of Dramanti Artisan Roaster fame and is an ode to the culinary cultures of their homeland. The 65-seater restaurant opened in August 2021, showing off an interior boasting an open-plan kitchen, newly constructed bar and decor (and teal, gold and green colour scheme) inspired by the mountainous regions of the Balkans. Kasina’s menu offering mixes Balkan and Australian elements – think hearty village-style eats like cevapi (grilled minced-meat sausages), peksimeti (deep-fried savoury or sweet dough), mućkalica (beef or pork roasted-pepper goulash) and traditional Balkan platters. Breakfast will be added to the menu in the coming months, while new recipes will be added seasonally. Kasina’s drinks list featured Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian and French wines, local craft beers, signature cocktails and plenty of rakija – a fruit brandy that is incredibly popular in the Balkans.
