Grumpy Madam

Evelyn Street in Newstead is the home of Grumpy Madam, a airy cafe that is welcome and wholesome despite what the name may indicate. The cafe is the first project for owner Gareth Cochrane, who has long dreamed of opening his own venue. Grumpy Madam focuses on wholefoods and clean dishes, with a simple menu of roughly 12 items across breakfast and lunch served alongside Blackboard Coffee. Gareth promises you won’t find the likes of eggs benedict and smashed avocado on the menu – instead think Scotch eggs served with tea-smoked salmon and korma mayo, horta (sauteed greens) with lemon, fried egg, salted nuts and honey bacon, poached-chicken bibimbap, and beef short rib tacos.
