Gianni’s Kitchen brings the flavours of Italy to Newstead

There is something different about the food in Italy. Perhaps it is something in the water, or something in the air, but there is a distinct taste to authentic Italian food that somehow can’t be wholly recreated outside of its native Italy.

Determined to recreate that authentic Italian flavour in the heart of Newstead, Gianni Greghini and head chef Rossano Tantulli of Hamilton’s Gusto da Gianni have opened Gianni’s Kitchen on Kyabra Street. Their latest venture features a traditional Italian trattoria on one side, complete with a custom-made Beech wood-fired pizza oven, and a deli on the other side, each sprawling out to a shared courtyard. Rossano and his team make almost everything in-house, from the pasta and pizza dough right down to the cheese, but what really allows Gianni’s Kitchen to get that authentic Italian taste is the Italian ingredients. While many Italian restaurants might source their olive oil or pasta sauce from Italy, Gianni’s Kitchen exclusively imports even the most simple of ingredients. The bread is par-baked in Milan, the flour is sent from Naples – even the water used to make the dough is imported from Italy. On the menu you’ll find a plethora of Italian delicacies, including squid ink pasta with prawns and cherry tomato, veal scaloppina in lemon sauce, and a broad selection of pizza toppings.

Set to open next week, the deli side will have a more casual approach, serving up breakfast in the morning and counter meals during the day. Like a traditional Roman deli, you can select from a wide range of imported Italian condiments, preserves and dried goods (including rare artisanal dried pasta) off the floor-to-ceiling shelves, or choose one of the many French and Italian cheeses from the fridge. At the counter you can order freshly made panini and salads, or make your own pasta by choosing from the fifteen different types made on-site each day and pairing it with one of the collection of house-made sauces on offer. The deli will also sell Italian wine, gelato, arancini and pastries, as well as cold meats, olives and other deli staples, so you can gather everything you need to recreate an Italian feast in the comfort of your own home.
