After a few delays and plenty of anticipation, the folks behind Fortitude Valley’s Yard Bird Ale House have opened the doors to their second bar in Paddington. No collars or leather shoes are required here, just a thirst for interesting beers and a craving for American chow. Perched on the rise of Given Terrace, opposite The Kettle and Tin and Fundies wholefood cafe, the casual watering hole brings the qualities you love about the original, plus a few welcome extras. The new venue has stayed true to Yard Bird’s American food bent, while also adding a breakfast service and an extended wine list. The venue trades from 7:00 am every morning and promises to keep the doors open and the beers flowing until midnight every night. Between running the Fortitude Valley bar and 198 Tattoo in Norman Park, owner Luke Purnell completed most of the renovations himself, crafting a sleek navy-and-timber space studded with the vibrant works of professional tattoo artists. Giant gaping windows invite the breeze in on sultry afternoons, while also framing the view into the bar and out towards the rolling hills of Paddington.

Start your day with a cup of Bear Bones coffee or a T2 brew, and hoe into filling breakfast dishes like the standout waffles with either a side of butter and Canadian maple syrup; bacon, egg and Canadian maple syrup; or mixed berry compote, whipped cream, Canadian maple syrup and powdered sugar. Takeaway breakfast options are also available, inviting hurried workers to grab a smoked salmon bagel or egg, bacon and oven-roasted tomato on sourdough to go. The lunch and dinner menu tempts bellies with six different styles of chicken wings, from honey barbecue and garlic and parmesan to chipotle barbecue and the ominous ‘hot death sentence’. A range of pizzas, burgers, salads and bar snacks like chilli cheese fries and quesadillas round out the main menu. No visit to Yard Bird is complete without a cold brew, so take your pick from the eight seasonally rotating beer taps – which currently include the likes of 4 Pines, Stone & Wood, Monteith’s and Coopers – or the 30 bottled beers waiting in the fridge.
