Saia Hanlon, musician, Gold Coast

We live by what we call 'HnC', which is honesty and consistency ...

If you’re a fan of jazz, soul, rhythm and blues, chances are you’re already well across local outfit the Hanlon Brothers and if not, you should rectify that immediately. Effortlessly dancing between genres, the local lads have built up a solid following of fans who can’t get enough of the band’s cruisy Gold Coast sound. We took five with Saia Hanlon from the band ahead of their headline gig at Broadbeach Jazz Weekend next weekend to chat about slashes and inspiration. Broadbeach Jazz Weekend takes over the beachside suburb from Saturday August 20 to Sunday August 21.

Congratulations on your album Featured, what themes or influences did you draw upon for this record?
It’s a mixture of our surroundings, which for most of the time is Burleigh, hence the happy-sunshine vibe, and also from the music we love.

Your music kind of skips effortlessly between jazz, soul and blues, how would you describe your unique style?
A series of slashes is probably the best way to describe it.

Where does that musical influence stem from?
Childhood. We were lucky enough to be exposed to a wide range of music growing up as our father was a working musician.

What inspires you creatively?
Life, family, lifestyle, movies, travelling, reading. It’s another series of slashes!

What have been some of the greatest challenges making music your full-time career?
Losing our parents was the most challenging personally but from an industry perspective, restrictions on live music venues and public areas is a biggie. It just means that fewer people are being exposed to live music.

And some of the biggest rewards?
Being able to live a life expressing ourselves through music and sharing it with loved ones.

You’re gearing up to play a headlining set at Broadbeach Jazz Weekend, what can punters expect from Hanlon Brothers’ show?
A little bit of everything. The show we’re working on is like a rollercoaster, it takes you on a music ride of mostly originals, improv and some tributes to the artist we love.

Any words to live by?
Funny you should say that, we live by what we call ‘HnC’, which is honesty and consistency. It’s our screening process on ourselves and people we collaborate with.

Only a Gold Coast local would know … that we live in the best city in the world!
