The line of people out the door on weekends is indication that Blackboard in Varsity Lakes is undoubtedly a popular place for breakfast, brunch and lunch. The popular espresso house and cafe, owned by Nick Pearce and Marc Kinvig, underwent the complete gut and redesign over the Christmas 2016/2017 break to create an entirely new environment with far more space, a new interior, and a redeveloped menu. Think of it as an entirely new venue, because it is. The menu takes a shine to classic breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes with an added twist, and focusses heavily on fresh, local produce. As the day progresses, so does the menu – the hot smoked salmon with beetroot, pickled cucumber and creme fraiche is a colourful vibe, or the ox tomatoes (straight from Byron Bay) with burrata, basil, almond, lemon and smoked garlic toast is an even lighter option.
