SURF/BRAND revives the lost art of bodysurfing

For those of us who aren’t genetically gifted with the nimble agility, flexibility and balance required for surfing, there is an alternative. Local company SURF/BRAND is handcrafting a range of hand planes for bodysurfing.

Riding a wave using only your body as a planing surface is one of the original and purest forms of surfing. Hailed ‘the lost art’, local crew SURF/BRAND, or S/B as it’s become known in surfing circles, and its clever range of hand planes are rediscovering the love for bodysurfing. Used in tandem with fins, hand planes increase manoeuvrability and overall ride time.

S/B’s range of hand planes are handmade from ethically-forested Australian Paulownia wood, coated with environmentally-friendly acrylic sealers and finished with locally produced straps, pads and fittings. The brainchild of Claudio Kirac and Paul Bow, long time veterans of the surf, art and fashion industries, SURF/BRAND is all about originality, quality and sustainability. S/B also produce a range of one-off luggage pieces made from re-purposed materials and a clothing range. With a strong focus on craftsmanship and a bespoke hand-made aesthetic, SURF/BRAND is keeping production as local as possible for as long as possible. SURF/BRAND is currently available at Alfred’s Apartment and Small Stall on the Gold Coast and online.
