The Weekend Series: get prepped with our Splendour Survival Guide

The biggest musical event of the year is imminent ¬– soon thousands of party people will be heading to Byron Bay for the annual Splendour in the Grass Festival. If you aren’t a seasoned festival punter, we’ve compiled a quick list of hints and tips to ensure you make it through the weekend unscathed.

Ensure you have the basics
You don’t want to be put on the back foot as soon as you arrive because you forgot a few of the essentials. These are no-brainers but you’d be surprised what you can overlook when packing the night before. Make sure you have these packed: ticket (seriously, not a joke), parking or camping pass, poncho, gumboots, baby wipes (trust me), a roll or two of toilet paper (again, trust me), hand sanitiser, a warm jumper or jacket, extra pairs of socks, toothpaste and toothbrush, pillow, sleeping bag, tent and at least one chair and plenty of garbage bags.

Turn off your mobile data
Every year, the mobile phone coverage around the Splendour festival site drops out completely thanks to the huge amount of “where r u?” texts and Instagram updates flying around. Our advice is to turn off mobile data because you wont be able to call or text your friends anyway, and if you are planning on playing Pokémon Go at Splendour then you might as well have not bothered buying a ticket. You should just save precious battery power for photos that you can smugly upload when you get home or if you encounter WiFi. If you don’t want to lose your friends, just plan your day and meeting points ahead of time in case you separate and want to link back up later.

Make your campsite special
Although you’ll be spending most of your time in the festival grounds, your campsite should also be a comfortable haven if things get too intense and you need to chill out for a spell. If you are camping with friends, get everyone to pitch in for a tarpaulin to cover your communal space, an inflatable sofa and a simple foldout card table. If you have trouble locating your campsite in the sea of tents and vehicles, a handy unique festival flag and solar powered fairy lights can assist in pinpointing where your setup is.

Stock up on some decent snacks
Eating while camping usually boils down to how much snack food you can pack into your car boot. Chips and crackers are all well and good for a little while, but you can’t start your day with Doritos (trust me, I’ve tried). A balanced camping breakfast can be achieved by packing a few simple foodstuffs – grab a bag of muesli and some long-life milk to keep in the esky for some slow burn energy, or buy some fruit and nut mix or a box of Uncle Toby’s Fruity Bites to chomp on (they make for a good snack with or without milk). If you are feeling capable, you will make a lot of friends by whipping up bacon and egg rolls with a small gas cooker and a hot plate. Be sure to also stock up on fruit if you can, but we won’t judge you if you opt for festival langos for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Make sure you look your best (within reason)
Okay, I know festivals are all about the outfit, but you all need to remember that IT’S STILL WINTER. Be sensible with your festival fashion – fellas, stringlets are not a good idea (not to mention eight years out of fashion) and ladies, playsuits (while being super cute) are a pain at festivals. Wear them at your peril, unless you like nuding it up inside gross portaloos. We recommend changing outfits before sunset or prepare to freeze your bits off – this goes for both genders. Keep your bits safe, people! Jeans, boots, a hat (Triple J is actually on to something with the legionnaires) and some cheap sunnies will keep you comfy and you can dress it up as much as you like. Also, get over the morph suit phase – seriously, no one thinks it’s funny anymore and we are seeing way too much of you.
