Long-weekend bingeing – grab the popcorn and watch these Netflix picks

The Easter long weekend is here and, thanks to forecasted rain and cancelled plans due to an impending lockdown extension, most of us will be spending a lot of time indoors over the next few days. Perfect conditions for a couch session, if you ask us! Luckily for us, Netflix has just released a bunch of exciting new content, just in time. From wholesome family viewing to female-forward flicks, here are a few Netflix gems that are worth binging.

Yes Day
This family-friendly flick stars everyone’s favourite mum Jennifer Garner (please do yourself a favour and check out her cute-as-pie Instagram here) and Édgar Ramírez as well-meaning parents Allison and Carlos, who are doing their best to raise their brood. Always feeling like they have to say “no” to their youngsters, the pair decide to give their offspring a ‘yes day’, during which the kids have 24 hours to make the rules – queuing up a lot of mayhem and messy hijinks. This is wholesome family viewing at its best.

Moxie
If you’re after a good dose of girl power, this is your movie. Moxie follows a high schooler (played by Hadley Robinson) who, after finding out about her mum’s (Amy Poehler) rebellious past and making a confident new friend, publishes an anonymous zine calling out sexism at her school. With a jam-packed cast, a banger soundtrack (Bikini Kill for the win!) and a hefty amount of coming-of-age charm, this film is feel-good feminist viewing that will have you cheering in your seat.

Superstore
Boasting a loveable ensembles of actors (including Ugly Betty alum America Ferrera), Superstore should be at front-and-centre of your next sitcom binge-fest. The show follows a group of employees working at big-box store Cloud 9 as they face the day-to-day challenges of working in retail – pesky customers and all. The best part? There’s five seasons of this bad boy (with a sixth on the way), so get ready to dig into that couch groove again.

The Dig
Starring British darlings Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James, The Dig is based on the true story (and 2007 novel of the same name) of wealthy landowner Edith Pretty, who hires amateur archaeologist Basil Brown to investigate the mounds on her property in England. What they find is probably the most famous excavation of a medieval grave in Europe – the Anglo-Saxon burial at Sutton Hoo. This movie makes for captivating viewing and has the added bonus of a history lesson too – a win, win.

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel
This docu-series chronicles the mysterious death of Elisa Lam at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles, where footage of her final moments resulted in a viral hunt and a number of zealous internet theories. This series digs deep to uncover the mystery behind Elisa’s death and gives a truly chilling insight into the hotel, which also hosted two of America’s most renowned serial killers – the ‘Night Stalker’ Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger. We suggest not watching this one alone.
