Wrap yourself in a Turkish towel from MAYDE

MAYDE, based in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, offers a collection of beautiful hand-loomed Turkish towels or peshtemals, as they are otherwise known as.

Unlike a conventional terry towel that may look a touch out of place strewn around your neck in public, Turkish towels have a myriad of uses beyond that of drying your body. The versatile cotton beauties are often worn as scarfs, shawls and can be used as wraps for a baby, picnic rugs, and even throw rugs for furniture. MAYDE’s collection of beach towels, bath towels and beach blankets are no exception. The towels are hand-loomed and are available in a range of sizes and patterns including the vibrant Rainbow Turkish Towel, the soft turquoise Airlie Turkish Towel and the generously-sized Tallow Beach Blankets.

MAYDE is a passion for owner, Sylvia Hill, who travelled to Istanbul in 2013 to meet with local suppliers. As far as experiences go, it was a visual and sensory amplification and she was hooked from the very first meeting. MAYDE towels are created using traditional practices and only the best local cotton. The benefit is that they are lightweight, soft, fast-drying and ultra-absorbent. With most things that are made by hand, you can expect the odd imperfection here and there but it’s these slight oddities that offer a little reminder that this towel was made by a real person. MAYDE towels can be found at Small Stall in Palm Beach, Sunhouse Surf Shop & Cafe in Coolangatta, St. Barts in Southport as well as online.
