Clothing – it’s a basic necessity in life, right up there alongside food, water and shelter. More often than not, we buy clothing purely for its fashion appeal – and that’s something we take for granted. Homelessness is a huge issue in Australia and there’s a group of guys that are tackling it head on in the form of apparel brand HoMie.

HoMie is a Melbourne-based social enterprise that provides brand-new clothing, retail training and job opportunities to those experiencing homelessness by selling apparel online and through its bricks-and-mortar venue on Brunswick Street in Fitzroy (which was established via crowd funding in 2015). Founders Marcus Crook, Robert Gillies and Nick Pearce knew little about the issue of homelessness initially, but embarked on the HoMie journey when they began to notice misconceptions about how and why people fall into the situation in the first place.

HoMie’s primary mission is to provide pathways out of homelessness. Earlier this year, they launched The Pathway Project, which saw a group of trainees successfully complete a certificate course in retail operations to further assist their transition into employment. HoMie’s collection of tees, tanks, long-sleeves and accessories is so rad – head online for a gander and start buying some gear that will genuinely make a difference.
