The Weekend Series: from doughnut sushi to filling the Game of Thrones void – five things we are vibing in July

We just passed the halfway point of 2016 and things are just starting to heat up (figuratively – we’re freezing). A bunch of quirky foodie trends, dream travel destinations and great pop culture fodder is keeping us inspired this month. Here is what we are vibing …

Doughnut Sushi
As far as hybrid foods go, this one is one of the most adorable we’ve seen lately. Doughnuts and sushi sit at near opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to taste and health benefits, but one adventurous foodie blogger So Beautifully Raw fused the two into one superfood – sushi doughnuts. A ring of sticky rice is used instead of dough, topped with sesame seeds, cucumber and just about any popular combo you’d choose for a sushi roll. This creation has gone viral, with many other blogs and food stores looking to get involved. These are some doughnuts we’d have no problem eating an entire box of.

Bill Cunningham
Sad news came to light a little while back of the passing of iconic street style photographer Bill Cunningham. A longstanding giant of the fashion industry, Bill worked tirelessly to capture unique styles on New York’s runways and street corners for the New York Times. If you aren’t acquainted with Bill’s work, we suggest watching Bill Cunningham New York, a documentary that goes into detail about Bill’s life and work. Additionally, you can head to the New York Times website to check out Bill’s videos on New York’s fashion scene.

TWE-Rainbow-Latte

Rainbow Lattes
We’ve had rainbow bagels and cheese toasties, so why not rainbow lattes? An enterprising barista called Mason Salisbury in Las Vegas has caused a stir online by blending food colouring in coffee foam, creating drinkable works of art. This takes regular latte art to another level and assuredly adds a little bit of magic to any morning pick-me-up. Here’s hoping some creative coffee fiend does something similar in Australia soon (hint, hint!). Although they aren’t offering rainbow lattes just yet, Corbett & Claude is whipping up pink lattes for patrons to enjoy – although they are almost too pretty to drink!

TWE-Preacher

What to binge on post Game of Thrones
How are you coping since the jaw-dropping season finale of Game of Thrones the other week? If you are struggling to move on from what was arguably the best season yet, we suggest weaning yourself back to normalcy with some other shows. New kid to the block Preacher has been receiving less attention than it deserves in the US as a result of sharing the same time slot of Game of Thrones. Now, the show can really show audiences what it is made of, with some intense action and comedy earning it rave reviews only a few episodes in. Orange is the New Black’s fourth season appeared on Netflix last month, so if you’ve been neglecting the ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary it’s time to come back to the fold. If you need a bit of medieval grit in your life, catch up on Vikings before the second half of season four hits screens later this year. Keen for a laugh? The latest season of Silicon Valley is a riot – get on this show immediately.

TWE-Floating-Piers

The Floating Piers
Ever heard of the Yellow Brick Road? Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s art installation The Floating Piers is sounds like something plucked out of The Wizard of Oz, but almost more magical. Decades in the making, The Floating Piers opened to the public in June, offering visitors the chance to walk across Lake Iseo on 100,000 square metres of bright orange fabric and recyclable plastic, linking the islands of Monte Isola and San Paolo. Unfortunately, like most magical journeys, the walkway was not built to last forever and was closed to the public earlier this week after drawing in 1.2 million visitors over its 16-day lifespan.
