Vegan Aisle Eatery & Bar brings plant-based burgers, hot dogs and fries to the south

Generally speaking, burgers, hot dogs, pizzas and loaded fries aren’t exactly foods that you would associate with a vegan lifestyle. If you opt for plant-based nourishment but miss the satisfaction of tucking into a cheeseburger or saucy sausage, then follow your nose south to Vegan Aisle Eatery & Bar. There’s not an animal product in sight and even the most carnivorous among us will be fooled by this fare.

This newie comes from local lads Brett Page and James Denney, the owners of the Gold and Tweed Coasts first all-vegan supermarket, Vegan Aisle, which opened on Stuart Street in Tweed Heads in October last year. Keeping the Vegan Aisle name, the new eatery and bar is bringing everything from vegan burgers to pizzas and fries to the table from the space formerly occupied by Loki Cafe in the heart of Tweed. For now, it’s all about daytime eats, with nights to follow down the track. If you’re not vegan, don’t run away! Not only will you be welcomed with open arms here, the food – from the fish and chips to the smoky bacon burger – is designed to satisfy your meaty desires.

The doors swing open at 10:00 am, so you’ll be able to get coffees, acai bowls and vegan snacks on-the-go before the lunch-time hunger kicks in. Burgers roll out later in the day, with hearty combinations like the The VB (stands for vegan burger, not the beer) with a vegetable-protein based meat-free patty topped with American-style (vegan) cheddar, beetroot, lettuce, tomato and sprouts – or there’s the Cheezeburger with cheese, pickles, mustard and ketchup, served with a basket full of hand-cut fries. Prefer pizza? Go for a simple Margherita or The Smokin Babe with vegan sausage, bacon and barbecue sauce. Now, what goes best with burgers and pizzas? Beer! Yep, you can have that too – Vegan Aisle is licensed and serves tinnes, stubbies and glasses of wine, or you can opt for ice-cold kombucha or a vegan milkshake.
