East meets west at Urbanistar Burleigh
Tucked away down the laneway past Canteen Kitchen, Urbanistar Burleigh is a melting pot of eastern and western flavours that are inspired by owners Ron Babb and Tang Li’s favourite tastes. The cafe opened its heavy timber doors last month and has quickly found a following of patrons who appreciate the unexpected union.
A nod to the ‘toast and toppings’ cafes that are popping up all over California, Urbanistar Burleigh offers some traditional morning munchies including avocado and feta alongside some more unusual concoctions including Greek yoghurt and peanut butter topped with banana, walnuts and Tasmanian honey on toast. Beyond toast, Urbanistar offers some hearty winter all-day breakfast favourites including corn and zucchini fritters as well as a chorizo, mushroom and green vegetable omelette and smoked salmon with herbed cream cheese and a gooey poached egg on sourdough. Come midday, however, the lunch menu offers a whole new array of nosh that is inspired by Li’s heritage. Originally from Chengdu in the Sichuan province in China, Li has added a delicious Asian twist to the midday menu that includes fried rice and delectably plump handmade dumplings. Even the steak sandwich is smothered with Sichuan spices to give it an unexpected burst of flavour, a hallmark of Sichuan cuisine. The vegetarian burger that is made with sweet potato and black beans has also been a standout for diners.
The venue, formerly a doctors surgery, has been completely revamped to create a cosy environ that is graced with the warm afternoon sun. Unpretentious and unexpected, Urbanistar Burleigh is kind on your purse strings as well as your tastebuds. See our Stumble Guide for opening times.
