The Wiener Haus has opened its first stand-alone diner on the Gold Coast!
Friends, the time has come. No longer will you have to run around the streets, festivals and events across the Gold Coast and Brisbane to get some of The Wiener Haus goodness in and around your mouth. Owner Paddy Skicko has (literally) dropped a shipping container out the front of Stocklands Shopping Centre in Burleigh Heads to create the very first The Wiener Haus diner. Here’s the long and short of it …
The Gold Coast first got a taste of The Wiener Haus in June 2013 when the food truck hit the streets for the first time, upping the ante on the humble hot dog, which generated a solid following of locals who just couldn’t get enough of these saucy German wieners. This week, The Wiener Haus quietly opened the shipping container window, much to the delight of wiener-lovers who can now get a tasty kranksy in their bun every single day of the week. The new diner has seen the introduction of a drool-worthy new menu for The Wiener Haus, which will remain exclusive to the diner. It may be a little uncouth, but we’re going to drop The Wiener Haus’ new dessert on you first – the gelati sandwich, but it’s not just any gelati sandwich. The wiener-makers grab scoops of vegan gelati (straight from Scoop Gelati in Burleigh Heads) and shove it straight inside a buttery, freshly baked croissant. Do you need a moment? Okay, take a deep breath, then keep reading.
All the original hot dogs remain on the menu, but the offering has expanded with new dog toppings including the Yorker, with sliced cheese, pastrami, pickle, relish and sauerkraut, and the Monika Lewinsky with American-style runny nacho cheese and crumbed bacon jerky. There’s also new sides like salted crinkle-cut chips served plain or drowning in nacho cheese, bubblegum milkshakes, soda water on tap splashed with flavourings like Granny Smith and ginger, Pink Lady and raspberry, and lemon myrtle. All of this goodness is pumped out of a simple, yet totally impressive custom-made shipping container, which got dropped on the site just days before opening. There is seating for about 15 people, which is due to expand in the coming weeks. You won’t miss it when you drive into Stocklands – just look for the giant yellow wiener sign.
