Nobby Beach welcomes a new whisky, wine and tapas bar

When the sign went up late last year, it’s fair to say its curious name raised a few eyebrows. Now, five months later, Snobby’s Wine Bar & Bistro in Nobby Beach has been given a chic makeover to become The Maven, wine, whisky and tapas bar. But before you go thinking it’s the same bar with a new name, that’s just the beginning.

A wall lined with 2,300-or-so undulating wine bottles sends the clear message that The Maven is not just the same bar with a lick of paint and a fancy name. The venue has been completely re-imagined and features a more diverse menu and a dark, sexy interior created by the gents from Studio Worskshop, whose handiwork you might remember from Nørd Coffee Co and most recently Little Mermaid.

If you fancy the odd nip of whisky, The Maven offers a range of one-off bottles such as the 16-year-old Ladaig Tobermory, alongside an impressive wine list and an ever-changing selection of tapas. Perch yourself at the bar and pick at a charcuterie board or take a seat and make your way through a feast of char-grilled lamb cutlets, crispy pork belly and harissa-spiced prawns and ciabatta. There are a couple of larger options including sticky pork ribs, a beef cheek hot pot and a chicken picatta if you’re particularly famished. Wash it down with a whisky sour or go all out with a super-sized jug of sparkling peach and raspberry sangria, because life’s too short for boring beverages.
