The Lake Brewhouse fills iconic Varsity Lakes corner with burgers, brews and ribs
The iconic corner space on the main drag of Varsity Lakes, which was occupied for nearly a decade by The Lake Cafe, has a tasty new tenant – The Lake Brewhouse. That’s right folks, there’s a new microbrewery in town, and it’s serving hearty, North American-inspired eats alongside its own preservative-free beers that are brewed literally within metres of your seat.
The new brewhouse concept is the brainchild of Canadian natives James and Julia Lee, who jumped on the vacant space to create The Lake Brewhouse after relocating to the Gold Coast from Ontario. With a 30-year background in the restaurant industry, James has transformed the prominent venue into an in-house microbrewery and restaurant, with an extensive menu filled with American-style cuisine with a hint of modern flair. Whilst we never like to see a vacant restaurant space, The Lake Brewhouse is most certainly a welcome and vibrant new edition to the Varsity Lakes precinct. Okay, let’s get to the food. Breakfast is served daily from 7:00 am, with the menu split into ‘lighter’ and ‘substantial’ options – the latter featuring hearty dishes like hot smoked salmon with house hash and the Brewhouse Burrito with chorizo, black beans, cheese, slaw and scrambled eggs.
Come lunch and dinner time, the menu steps up a notch, showcasing a refined take on North American fare with the likes of poutine (if you’re not familiar with poutine, you need to be … right now), southern fried squid, jalapeno poppers, three-cheese croquettes and Nashville fried chicken wings. If you’re not into sharing, then wrap your mitts around a Brewhouse Burger, with Montreal smoked thick bacon, a wagyu beef patty, cheese, fried onion rings and aioli – this one, friends, is all-time. The roasted pork chop, served simply with grilled peaches and salsa verde, and the lamb ribs topped with sweet pickled peppers and Alabama white barbecue sauce are just some of the brewhouse’s meaty signature dishes. Nab a spot overlooking the lake, get a schooner of house-brewed beer in your hand and soak up the North American foodie vibe.
