The round-up: drool-worthy jaffles you need in your life

There’s one thing we love during winter – jaffles. Sure, the homemade varietals do the job, but piping hot, oozing jaffles are way better when someone else makes them for you. Plus, you get to spice it up with flavour combinations like lasagne, spiced pork or banoffee (these exist, read on). If this weather is giving you a hankering for jaffles on the daily, then here are a few of local favourites that you need to get in front of your face immediately.

Randy Wallhole: Taking you right back to your childhood with Snack Packs and Fruit Loops, Randy Wallhole in Southport also grills up a super satisfying jaffle. The Mum’s Special with Heinz spaghetti, cheese and pepper is a belly-warming winter staple but it’s the NWA (Google it) with Vegemite and/or peanut butter and cheese that had us hooked. Note the ‘or’ option … yeah, we’re adventurous, but even we have our limits.

Fingers and Bones: A jaffle made by a former Jamie Oliver chef has got to be good, right? You betcha. Fingers and Bones owner and chef Dennis Duncanson keeps it real with his rotating daily jaffles, including combinations like spiced pork and beans with oozy camembert, spring onion and tomato relish.

Stairwell Coffee: Coffee and jaffles … is there anything better in life? From its bright green digs below a stairwell in a sneaky little alleyway in The Centre Arcade in Surfers Paradise, Stairwell Coffee whips up some seriously good jaffles alongside its killer coffee. The local fave is the three-cheese jaffle (we’re all for cheesiness) as well as the Hawaiian jaffle with ham, cheese, tomato and … wait for it … pizza sauce. Life = complete.

Sparrow Eating House: Sparrow’s signature puff-pastry banoffee jaffle is a sweet, delicious dream. The crunchy, flaky pastry, gooey banana centre and salty sauce takes the jaffle game to new heights by putting a restaurant-quality spin on the pockets of goodness. This delight is a local favourite, and we’re pretty sure a city-wide riot would erupt if it were to ever leave its menu.

Sandwich Bros: So, Sandwich Bros is known for, well, sandwiches – and the Surfers Paradise hub has it down to a fine art. Alongside its daily spread of delicious organic-sourdough toasted sambos, you’ll find a mind-blowing lasagne jaffle on the menu each week on Tuckshop Tuesday (a day that throws back to the deliciousness of childhood).

Spikexx Espresso: This Palm Beach coffee hub (formerly known as Hendrixx Espresso) pumps out a darn-fine series of jaffles every single day. The classic ‘spag bowl’ jaffle is a hit, or kick it old-school with the ‘get baked’ – jammed with piping-hot baked beans and Swiss cheese. Simplicity is key when it comes to jaffles, so we totally dig the vibe of the Spikexx’s uncomplicated combos.
