The Glenelg Public House opens in Mermaid Beach
The old laundromat on the Gold Coast Highway in Mermaid Beach has made way for the Gold Coast’s first gastropub, The Glenelg Public House. The rustic venue offers simplicity with a touch of sophistication.
Existing somewhere between the past and the present, The Glenelg Public House presents a modern take on the traditional English pub. The classy new timber-clad venue is the work of Aaron Smith and is underpinned by a philosophy of simplicity done well. Pendant lights suspended from heavy sleepers create an inviting industrial vibe, a vibe that is further reinforced by the setting of Chesterfield couches next to the bar. Pull up a stool and while away time with a cocktail or be lured into the main dining area by the promise of modern Australian fare with an elegant edge. Whet your appetite with a selection of starters including cured snapper with fennel, grapefruit and herbs and rabbit terrine that is served with pickles and toast. For the main affair, the venue prides itself on showcasing some less common cuts of beef of exceptional quality including oyster blade and chuck tail. The Black Onyx petite tender, for example, offers a marble score of four to five and is grain-fed for 270 days. Round out your meal with some sides to share, the char zucchini with lemon and olive oil and the huge chunk of cauliflower topped with bacon and hazelnuts are among the standouts. If you can’t resist a little something sweet to finish, the hot chocolate chip cookie that is baked to order and topped with chocolate ice-cream is simply divine.
Alongside the fare, The Glenelg Public House offers a decent selection of craft beers including Sydney’s 4 Pines on tap as well as an incredibly vast array of wines. The cocktail list reflects the establishment’s ethos of simplicity done well and showcases classic cocktails including Old Fashioned and Manhattans.
