Tuck into fancy fish and crispy chips at Southport’s The Fish Shak

Let’s get one thing straight – we’re not talking about fish and chips here. We’re talking fancy fish and chips. You know, that succulent, melt-in-your-big-mouth fish sided with crispy deep-fried chips. Honestly, is there anything better? Well, perched in the heart of Southport’s Broadwater Parklands is The Fish Shak, and it’s putting fancy fish and chips back on the map with fresh local seafood daily, oysters shucked before your eyes, a flash fit-out, tap beer and one helluva waterfront view.

The talented folk behind Longboards Laidback Eatery and Bar in Surfers Paradise have ventured slightly north with their latest venue. Let’s just say these guys know how a good location when they see one. The Fish Shak is situated in the heart of the Broadwater Parklands, with endless grassy knolls that run alongside the pristine waterfront. This really is a top-notch spot. Speaking of top-notch, we’ll get right to the good stuff – the food. What you’ll find here isn’t a restaurant – it’s a fancy fish and chip shop. There’s casual seating for around 90 all up, but it doesn’t matter how busy The Fish Shak gets, there is endless space in the parklands if you’re armed with a picnic blanket. While you’re waiting though, cast your eye toward the glass display to watch  the fish mongers work their magic – they’ve got this fishy business down to a fine art and it’s pretty cool to watch.

The seafood is local and arrives fresh daily, and there is a real focus on high-grade produce. Think prawns straight from the local trawler, freshly shucked oysters and a rotating selection of local top-quality fish fillets ready to be cooked fresh while you wait. For the favourite – fish and chips – you can choose from a Stone & Wood Pacific Ale beer batter, a tasty panko bread crumb or have it grilled with or without garlic butter. You’ll also find tasty fish burgers, tender calamari, battered prawns, crab claws, panko fish cakes, crumbed scallops plus fresh salads, cold drinks and ice-creams. The Fish Shak uses an impressive deep-frying system, imported from the UK, which is designed to give the food that extra special crisp. Here’s an idea – grab a piccolo of sparkling white or a frothy tap beer, a dozen fresh oysters, then tuck into The Shak Pack – now that’s a good little spread.
