Switchfoot at Rainbow Bay is an ode to surfing, quality coffee and community

We don’t think we’re being biased when we say that Rainbow Bay is a pretty magical part of the world. Three people who agree wholeheartedly are Mitch, Sarah and Katie – the trio who operate the beachside suburb’s brand-new coffee slinger, Switchfoot. If excellent coffee, chilled vibes and crumpets sound like a recipe for your ideal morning, read on for all of the delightful details …

Transforming the former Liquid Dreams juice bar, Switchfoot combines the tiny team’s love of surfing, quality coffee and community. By his own admission, Mitch is a coffee snob. In fact, prior to opening, he and the tight-knit Switchfoot team, which consists of his partner Sarah and front-of-house extraordinaire Katie, sipped far and wide before settling on the Rose Street blend by Fitzroy’s Industry Beans. The easy-to-drink full-bodied brew is smooth and sweet for long blacks, whilst also possessing the strength and richness to cut through milk and mylk alternatives – it’s what you might call a people-pleaser. Non-coffee drinkers aren’t forgotten, they can sip organic chai from The Fresh Chai Co., tea from Three Blue Ducks Tea Co, a freshly squeezed juice or smoothie. With no kitchen per se, Switchfoot is geared towards grab-and-go plant-based treats as well as heat-and-eat bites from Byron Goumet Pies alongside freshly made acai bowls and sourdough toasties. If time is on your side, settle in and order a serve of crumpets from Organic Sourdough Crumpet Co. with your choice of topping – smashed avo and feta, fresh fruit drizzled with maple syrup or keep it simple with a swathe of honey, lemon myrtle curd, peanut butter, jam or Vegemite. Switchfoot also stocks a limited batch of freshly baked loaves from Bread Social, but you’ll have to get in early to nab one to take home.

Switchfoot is a community-minded space with a big heart. A communal bench lines the footpath outside so that locals can mingle for a yarn while they wait for their coffee. Inside, the coffee slinger actively strives to reduce its footprint and stocks a curated selection of local wares – including sunscreen from We Are Feel Good Inc. to Cooly Wax, which is made by a crew of ex-defence force members that came together through the common interest of surfing to help combat mental health. The space itself is imbued with breezy beachy vibes complete with raw timber accents and sunflower-yellow bench seating. If the sun is shining and the waves are peeling, you may very well be met with a ‘be back in 10-minutes sign’ because the staff have gone for a quick dip in the ocean.
