Party of five – Cluccboi adds Sugarboi, Dragonboi, Deliboi and Fryboi to the family
It’s hard to believe that once upon a time, delivery options were limited to pizza or your local Chinese restaurant. Thankfully, things have changed, and these days, your options are limited only by your imagination and proximity to delivery partners. If you happen to reside in or around the Southport area and are a fan of the finger-lickin’ chicken from Cluccboi, get excited because owners (and chief Cluccbois) Stephen Kakoniktis and Chris Withers have expanded the family to five. Allow us to introduce you to the new bois on the block …
When Stephen Kakoniktis worked in fine dining (including manager at OTTO Brisbane) he was told repeatedly that it’s all about the delivery. It seems he took those words a little too literally. During the most difficult time the hospitality industry has ever faced, Stephen and his old school buddy and tech guru Chris Withers (who also introduced Uber Eats into Australia) proceeded to launch a delivery-only fried-chicken concept. As it turns out, the adage proved true – folks frothed on the duo’s express eats, prompting the gents to expand their operations to include Dragonboi, Sugarboi, Deliboi and Fryboi, with another one on its way in coming weeks. Whilst completely separate on the ordering platforms, the bois share a collaborative ghost kitchen called ShadowChef in Southport, which is a feat of tech engineering in itself. One bench is lined with a myriad of devices all hooked up to different networks, printers and platforms that support Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Menulog and Doordash.
As you may have deduced from the name, Dragonboi is a modern Asian offering inspired by Chris and Stephen’s various adventures travelling and studying abroad (remember travel?), and churns out a selection of small and big bites ranging from crispy spring rolls through to pork-and-chive dumplings (with special mention to the Taiwanese XXL fried chicken, which resembles a hand-held schnitty). Fryboi is all about loaded waffle fries and carb-induced food comas. The American Animal topped with crispy-fried bacon and onion and layered with oozy house-made cheese sauce is a crowd favourite (for obvious reasons) but the Cluccin’ Crazy, which borrows inspo from Cluccboi, also has a loyal fanbase. Deliboi is an ode to the not-so-humble toasted sanga with a selection of sandwiches served American-style with a side of crisps. Finally, for the sweet tooths, Sugarboi offers freshly baked cookies, gooey brownies and a couple of daily specials such as Nutella fudge, which is every bit as dense and delicious as it sounds. The sweet treats are available in packs of three, six or nine (life’s short, go the cheeky nine-pack!).
The meat across all of the bois is organic, GMO-free and hormone-free and all of the sauces are made in-house – so whilst it’s designed for the takeaway experience, there’s no compromise on quality. Considerable thought has also gone into preparing and packaging the food to ensure it travels well – because nobody likes soggy spring rolls or a sad sandwich! The gents are putting the finishing touches on Snagqueens, which will feature loaded hotdogs with hilariously cheeky names inspired by RuPaul, so keep your peepers peeled for that!
Cluccboi, Dragonboi, Fryboi, Deliboi and Sugarboi are available on Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Menulog and Doordash from Tuesday to Thursday from midday to 10:00 pm, Friday and Saturday midday to midnight. Pick-up is also available if you contact the boys direct.
