Get salty and sip lattes at Burleigh’s new surf hang

Two surf industry icons have combined their collective backgrounds in fashion design, art and apparel to create Burleigh’s newest coffee and retail space – Studio Surf. If you’re looking for a latte to sip after your morning paddle, need a new pair of boardies, or you’re on the hunt for a new surfboard – then this is where you’ll want to hang this summer.

Jamahl Grey, the founder of surf brand Rhythm, and Matt Gillett, who founded handcrafted surfboard and apparel brand Maywood, have collaborated to create the new Studio Surf retail, coffee and design space, which is located on the Gold Coast Highway just a stone’s throw from Burleigh’s point break. It’s certainly not your traditional surf shop – it’s a retail boutique with a dedicated design studio and shared workspace attached. Oh, and then there’s the coffee – this combination is pure genius. At the entrance you’ll find the studio’s takeaway coffee bar, pumping out Allpress coffee with a few cold drinks to boot. So, you can literally jump out of the surf, sandy feet and all, and soak up the Studio Surf vibe as you sip your morning latte. The Maywood gear is pretty rad though, so you may walk out with a shiny new plank under your arm too – take that as a warning.

The design studio itself will focus on nurturing final year design graduates as interns, and will give them the opportunity to curate and eventually execute their own apparel collections under the guidance and talented eyes of Jamahl and Matt. The retail space features Maywood’s handcrafted surfboards, plus surf apparel from boutique brands like RVCA, ThrillsThe Blanks Co and Stay Surf. Studio Surf will also open its doors as an events space, with regular yoga classes and art exhibitions in the pipeline for 2017.
