For us, Thai food is the culinary equivalent of a hug. Rich, flavoursome curries filled with meltingly tender meat, tastebud-tickling sauces slathered generously over delicate noodles and aromatic soups that hit in all the right places – it’s an experience to savour. If you could do with a hefty dose of comfort right about now, pull up a seat at Spice Kitchen & Bar in Broadbeach. Walking the line between traditional and contemporary, the casual newcomer is located within The Oasis dining precinct and is pushing the boundaries of Thai cuisine in the best way possible.

‘All you need is good food’ – this neon-lit inscription on the wall of Spice Kitchen & Bar speaks volumes about what’s to come. The restaurant is the handiwork of long-time pals Krystal Kewalee, Nan Chuminunt and head chef Tony Kritthaphas, who all grew up in Chiang Mai, Thailand before relocating to the Gold Coast. Although young, the insanely talented trio has been immersed in Thai traditions and culinary culture their entire lives with Tony in particular learning the trade from his mother and grandmother at the family restaurant back in Thailand. The team sought to pay homage to their background with a menu that fuses traditional elements with modern plating and creativity.

The first thing you need to know about the menu at Spice Kitchen & Bar is that, despite its name, it’s actually not excessively spicy. It can be, if you order it that way, but the trio has gone to great lengths to create dishes that are built on flavour rather than heat. Spice’s opening menu is inspired by some of the most popular dishes in Thailand with a reimagined spin so as to excite diners who are sticklers for tradition while also luring in those that historically aren’t huge fans of Thai cuisine. To start, there are tasty snacks like spice-fried chicken with housemade sriracha alongside baos loaded with your choice of honey chicken, mixed veg or pork, before moving onto belly-warming bowls of aromatic tom yum soup. Those keen on the classics can opt for stir-frys or a massaman, Penang or green curry, while those looking to experience a left-of-centre Thai dish can plunge a spoon into the venue’s specialty Lanna Thai curry, or Khao Soi, which doesn’t feature in many Australian Thai restaurants. Guests can finish with sweet treats including mango sticky rice with coconut ice-cream, or green tea and vanilla mochi. Spice Kitchen & Bar also slings a selection of wines, local craft beers and colourful cocktails and mocktails infused with Thai aromatics.
