We’ve got a secret for you. Nestled along the Gold Coast Highway in Broadbeach is a bright red door in the shape of a London telephone box. There’s no sign, but push open the handle and step inside to discover the coast’s first speakeasy-style bar – Soho Place. Here’s the catch – you can actually BYO food if you so desire. The intriguing new bar, which is one of the first on the Gold Coast to operate legally with no food service and no kitchen, will officially open today (June 15).

Back in May we dropped the news that Soho Place, the latest venture by Scott Imlach, owner of Bine Bar & Dining and Hideaway Kitchen & Bar (and former owner of Barchino and Nobbys Arc) was on its way. It’s themed around ‘speakeasy’ bars, which were illicit establishments that served alcohol during the Prohibition era – they were hidden and had little signage, and were all about what was behind the bar. True to style, Soho Place is dimly lit, covered in London-themed graffiti, and, as you’d expect, boasts one pretty darn impressive selection of drinkables.

Cocktails are the core here – but there aren’t any of your usual run-of-the-mill concoctions. You won’t find any ‘basic’ spirits here either, rather the bar will be pouring a selection of Australian-made spirits like Brookie’s and Four Pillars gins, Limeburners whisky and organic Small Mouth Vodka. You can kick off your cocktail-sipping on a savoury note with the Celery Snapper, which is a sweet twist on the bloody Mary using Rutte Celery Gin, served in a whole topped-off capsicum. Then, move onto the Monk Movie – that’s a cool little number with green chartreuse (French herbal liqueur), Gin Mare, popcorn syrup and lime juice – and it’s served with your own little stash of popcorn on the side. With around 40 seats, and further standing space, Soho Place puts a unique spin on the small-bar vibe – it’s perfect to enjoy a few pre- or post-dinner cocktails to the toe-tapping tunes of 1920s-style electro swing.
