If you’re still labouring under the misapprehension that vegan food just isn’t that good, you’ve obviously never paid a visit to Smith & Deli. The insanely popular Melbourne haunt has been feeding earthlings and fooling carnivores for years with its mouth-watering meals and treats, with people lining up around the block to get a taste. The masterminds behind this premier plant-based dining destination have been generous enough to reveal their secrets (read: pure sorcery) in the form of their new cookbook Smith & Deli-cious: Food from our Deli (That Happens to be Vegan).

When it comes to the dream team behind the food in Smith & Deli-cious, it’s hard to top the duo of Shannon Martinez and Mo Wyse. If you’re unfamiliar, these ladies are the brains behind both Smith & Deli and its sister restaurant Smith & Daughters in Melbourne’s Fitzroy – both of which venues have gained a massive cult following since opening a few years ago. The team’s unique approach to vegan cuisine has been a huge part of their success – Mo’s trailblazing passion for all things plant-based and creative flair keep the business skyrocketing upwards, while Shannon’s relentless quest to replicate and perfect flavours and textures ensure people keep coming back for more.

So what sort of dreamy creations can you find within the pages of Smith & Deli-cious? There are a whole heap of Smith & Deli favourites, from sweet treats to savoury snacks and everything in between. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or simply just curious about plant-based cooking, the book is stacked with options to suit all palates. Some of the dishes up vegan-ification include mac and cheese, spanakopita, beef bourguignon, scalloped potatoes, mince-meat pies, lasagne and doughnuts – and yeah, they taste so bloody good that you won’t even notice the lack of animal products.

Want to recreate your favourite plant-based treats at home? Smith & Deli-cious: Food from our Deli (That Happens to be Vegan) is out now through Hardie Grant books – to find your nearest stockist, head here.
