Chow down on line-caught fish and crisp chips from Small Fry in Robina
If you’ve been ‘herring’ rumours of a new fish and chippery in town that’s elevating the humble takeaway staple, allow us to introduce you to the new cod on the block – it’s called Small Fry and it’s slinging line-caught fish and mouth-watering morsels from the sea from a slick 1930s Airstream-turned-food-truck. Here’s everything you need to know …
While there’s some conjecture about the origins of the humble fish and chip dinner – some believe it originated in England while others claim it can be traced back to Portugal – either way, there’s no denying that it’s become a quick and easy takeaway staple for many. Squeezing a wedge of lemon over a freshly cooked piece of fish, biting into a crisp bug-stuffed bao and munching on mountains of chips (no chip shortage here, pals), it’s little wonder why it’s a go-to for many. If you’re partial to a cheeky fish and chip binge, you’ll find Small Fry slinging its morsels from the Airstream parked out the front of Global Pacific Seafoods in Robina. The shiny new food truck was a logical progression for brother-sister-duo Braden Ceccato, who is also a qualified chef having previously worked at Luke Mangan’s restaurant Salt Grill and Edgewater, to name just a few, and Georgina Ceccato. The seafood-loving siblings have been involved in the family’s wholesale operation before stepping out and taking the lead on the food truck side of things. The concept is inspired by the Sydney Fish Markets, which takes the day’s catch direct from boat to stall, cutting out the in-between links to ensure every piece of seafood is as fresh as fresh can be.
Small Fry champions sustainable fishing practices and uses predominantly line-caught fish. “We have a guy in Cairns called Benny and he goes out on a boat and catches most of the fish we serve in here with his rod,” says Braden. The mouth-watering menu is designed to change with the seasons and what’s available depends on what’s biting that day as nothing is frozen. “Every piece of fish is battered or grilled to order by a trained chef,” Braden says. It isn’t just fish that graces the Small Fry menu, hungry hordes can munch on Mooloolaba king prawns and salt-and-pepper squid alongside a freshly made bug baos that are loaded with housemade slaw. If you simply cannot decide, opt for the Treasure Box, which is filled with a little taste of everything. Braden and Georgina have grand plans for the carpark space including a coffee and gelato van to create a little one-stop dinner destination in Robina.
