Skull and Bones serving up hot brews and fresh bagels
Nestled in an unassuming nook off the Gold Coast Highway in Mermaid Beach, Skull & Bones Espresso Boutique, once the secret shared among locals, has officially brewed its way to institution status for local hangs, hangovers and hits of the caffeine kind.
Driven by a vision to bring a little Melbourne to the sunny Gold Coast, the cafe is the brainchild of Jesse Garlick. And with only a handful of tables, the quaint venue is generally jammed with folk who share his appreciation for quality and delicious bagels.
The coffee is roasted by Toby’s Estate in Sydney and is sustainably sourced direct from the farm to deliver uncompromised quality and freshness. However, if you’re lucky enough, your visit may coincide with a fresh batch of the Bonesmen’s own cold brew French press iced coffee. The Bones Brews are so popular they can rarely keep up with demand.
Beyond coffee, the crew also dish up some New York-inspired kettle boiled bagels in a myriad of flavours including gluten free, sunflower rye and jalapeno.
Skull & Bones donate the used coffee grind to a community garden and only use plant based and biodegradable materials where possible.
When asked to describe his version of paradise, Jonny Cash once said, ‘this morning, with her, having coffee’. Coincidentally, this is adorned on the wall at Skull & Bones.
