Balkan bites – Sandrino Kitchen brings authentic Serbian cuisine to the Gold Coast

While there are restaurants and cafes with menus that lightly touch on Serbian food, Gold Coast folk now have the opportunity to further explore the true tastes of the Southern European cuisine with the recent opening of authentic Serbian eatery Sandrino Kitchen & Bar, nestled off the beaten track in the Broadbeach Waters pocket of Florida Gardens.

With a menu that covers everything from cevapi with ajvar to coffee with a slab of flaky borek, Sandrino Kitchen & Bar is aiming to create a true homestyle atmosphere where locals can experience traditional Serbian cuisine – the same hearty, soul-warming fare that owners Nenad Miljkovic and Sandra Ostojic grew up eating. The duo took over the site (which originally housed cafe Society of Florida) back in November and initially launched Sandrino as a daytime coffee hub. After a few months, they decided to pivot their offering and transform the venue into an authentic Serbian eatery – a place where Gold Coast folk can settle in around family-sized tables and feast, sip and chat, in true Serbian style.

The menu kicks off with with predjela (starters) like Balkan-style fried whitebait (known as ‘gilice’) and share-style platters arranged with salami and cured meats, European cheeses, olives, ajvar and lepinja (flatbread). Next, you’ll find traditional salads like Serbian krompir (potato) salad and a fresh cabbage salad, known as ‘kupus’, served simply with olive oil and white vinegar. As for the mains – it’s all about sharing. Expect authentic dishes like cevapi (char-grilled skinless Serbian sausages) served with diced onion and potato salad, kobasice (pan-fried, semi-smoked sausages), sarma (traditional pickled cabbage leaves stuffed with mince and rice) and pasulj – a Serbian stew with white beans, sausage, bacon, vegetables and a side of lepinja flatbread. Though, the best way to experience all that Sandrino has to offer is with the mixed grill for one or two people – you’ll get a taste of everything, from pljeskavica (spiced mince patty) to raznjici (Balkan-style meat skewers) and more, all accompanied by salads, condiments, bread and ajvar.

Sweet tooths will want to save room to finish with some baklava and flaky borek, while those looking for a tipple can sip imported Serbian beers, spirits (including rakija) and sodas.
