Eat pizza and pasta at Burleigh Waters’ brand-new eatery, Rustica Italia

Eagle-eyed regulars to Treetops Plaza Shopping Centre in Burleigh Waters may have noticed the dining precinct on the outside has become a hive of activity of late. High-vis shirts and a constant stream of tradie trucks in and out signal the start of some exciting happenings. The brand-new neighbourhood noshery to open the bi-folds is Rustica Italia, a pizza and pasta bar that dishes up a delightful dose of woodfired bites and homestyle charm.

Rustica Italia was born from a desire to do deviate slightly from the norm. While some venue owners tend to gravitate towards the beachside hubs, every now and then, someone strays from the strip and looks inwards – much to the delight of those who reside within walking distance. Burleigh Waters locals have been quick to embrace Rustica Italia judging by the enthusiastic reception so far. Its owners, who have both previously owned and operated a number of successful venues, have taken the space next door to Euro Grill and immediately embarked upon a floor-to-ceiling fit-out to create Rustica’s raw and rustic red-brick interior. A neon light reads ‘fatto con amore’, which translates to ‘do it with love’ hovers above the entrance to the kitchen, which houses an impressive white-tiled D.O.C Napoli woodfired pizza oven that smoulders and crackles, filling the air with an unmistakable (and delicious) aroma of dough baking. There’s a handful of low-set tables hugging the perimeter, while outside, the deck is lined with a scattering of high tables that set the scene for many a wine-filled get-together.

Rustica Italia’s fare is described as the owner’s twist on Italian. They don’t claim to be the most authentic trattoria this side of Italy, because as much as they appreciate and respect culinary traditions, they also value their own freedom to add their own spin to things. Rip into a steamy crisp-on-the-outside-fluffy-on-the-inside focaccia that’s fresh out of the oven before attempting the double-sided menu. There are seven different kinds of pasta with your choice of linguine, pappardelle or penne, alongside three different kinds of gnocchi, which are all made fresh onsite. When it comes to the pizza, the selections are separated by base colour, with options for both red and white. Traditional tastes are accounted for with the classics such as Margherita and pepperoni alongside some more innovative options such as braised beef cheek, caramelised onion, roasted red peppers and mozzarella. The mains span the land and sea with a signature whole woodfired fish that’s rubbed in a sea-salt crust. Those with bambinos in tow will be pleased to know there’s a dedicated section for kids. Rustica Italia is fully licensed with a tantalising selection of drops from Australia, New Zealand and Italy, alongside Birra Moretti brews from Italy and Western Australia’s Little Creatures on tap. The cocktails present four signature sips including the Cosmocello (Ketel One, Cointreau, limoncello and cranberry) and Berry Club (blackberry gin, Dolin, Chambord, fresh berries, lemon and whites) alongside some booze-free options including the Rustica Iced Tea with fresh peach, raspberry and mint. For those who are keen to trade the desk lunch for something a little tastier, Rustica Italia offers a lunch special where you can tuck into a pizza, pasta or gnocchi with a glass of wine, beer or soft drink for $20. Takeaway is also available.
