The Gold Coast’s top milkshakes to quell your craving
It seems the humble milkshake is experiencing a comeback bigger than Madonna with cafes around the coast attempting to out-do each other with their marvellous milky creations. We’ve round-up a few of our top contenders for the Gold Coast’s best shakes.
Cult favourite Elk Espresso in Broadbeach not only dishes up some of the best breakfast in town but also some killer shakes. Push through the food coma and slurp on a decadent peanut butter and chocolate flavoured milk or the ever-popular Nutella shake. For the serious sugar rush, give the mind-blowing Elvis thickshake a whirl, which is every bit as indulgent as it sounds, peanut butter, banana, maple syrup and topped with delicious crispy bacon. There are also a couple of new flavours that are vying for a permanent place on Elk’s esteemed menu including ginger-nut crumble and peanut butter and jelly so if you like the sound of either or both of those, you’d better get down to Elk and make your vote count. Fuelling the Gold Coast’s love affair with a certain hazelnut spread, Skull and Bones Espresso Boutique’s blender is working over-time mixing up its delicious Nutella creations. Go all out and add peanut butter, or don’t, it’s your call. The amazing marvel is paired perfectly with one of the venue’s gooey Nutella-filled bronuts (a brioche doughnut for the uninitiated). If you can fathom a flavour other than Nutella (hard, we know) Skull and Bones also whips up banoffee, Snickers and crème brûlée shakes to fill the void in your stomach. For a shake with a caffeine kick, head over to Commune in Burleigh Heads for the Jumping Jimmy, which is essentially a banana smoothie with an espresso shot. If you’re keen to keep the kilojoules to a minimum, stick a straw into a delicious blended beverage from BSKT. While they all sound mighty tempting, the Miranda Kerr with its delicious mix of coconut sorbet, nut paste, coconut oil and cinnamon is a popular option but it’s pretty hard to go past the Bounty, which features cacao, maca, chocolate protein, coconut probiotic and cacao nibs. For an even healthier option, trade the milk for water.
Known for its devilishly decadent icy desserts, Gelato Messina at The Strand at Coolangatta also churns out fabulous frosty flavoured milks. And with 40 glorious flavours on offer including salted caramel and white chocolate alongside milk chocolate with choc peanut fudge, the possibilities are endless! Blurring the boundaries between beverage and dessert, Burleigh Social has really upped the ante on milkshakes with their jam doughnut creation. The shake itself is made with strawberry jam and is topped with an actual toasted doughnut, cream and strawberries. The lads are also experimenting with a couple of other flavours including a toffee apple variety so keep an eye out for that. If you can handle it, this weekend, Burleigh Social is also featuring a dessert burger which is a burger of French toast, ice-cream and Nutella topped with fresh strawberries, but we digress. Popular American burger institution Brooklyn Depot has created a range of cheeky adult-only milkshakes including the My Man, with Hershey’s chocolate sauce, ice-cream, crushed Oreos and Mozart black liqueur, the Honky featuring vanilla ice-cream, vanilla extract, coconut flakes and Galliano vanilla liqueur. If you fancy a little strawberry action, opt for the Yo’ Mama with ice-cream, strawberry puree, strawberry sauce, Kit Kat shards and a dose of Crème De Fraise strawberry liqueur or if salted caramel is more your style, the Gringo has you covered with ice-cream, dulche de leche, salted caramel sauce, brownie bits and Vortik fusion caramel vodka. Elston in Surfers Paradise is also serving up an alcoholic concoction called the That’s Nuts Nutella and contains Nutella, mozart chocolate liqueur, fireball cinnamon, ice-cream and milk. Of course this is just a snippet of some of the delicious milk-based marvels getting around, if your favourite didn’t make the list, jump onto our Facebook page and let us know!
