The round-up: Where to celebrate Oktoberfest on the Gold Coast

Dust off your dirndl and don your lederhosen because Oktoberfest is back for 2015! Each year more than six million people make the trip to Munich for the world’s largest beer festival. If you aren’t among them, don’t worry, we’ve round-up a bunch of places you can raise a stein right here on the Gold Coast.

With beers bigger than the average person’s head, salty pretzels and bratwurst, it’s no surprise that the annual Oktoberfest event is one of Australia’s favourite borrowed traditions. Citrique Restaurant at Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa is celebrating the annual tradition from Friday October 2 to Sunday October 11 with a German-inspired menu that is filled with all of your traditional German eats including hefty serves of Bratkartoffeln (potatoes with bacon) and mountains of German spätzle (egg-based noodle), just be sure to leave room for bee-sting cake, apple strudel and black forest chocolate cups. Cabana Bar & Lounge is also getting into the spirit with German beers and Oktoberfest-themed specials for the whole month so pop in, grab a Paulaner Hefe-Weizen bier, a kransky dog and say hallo to the venue’s manager Tanja Meyer who hails from Westerroenfel. If you love beer and meat, schuhplattler in to The German Club in Merrimac from October 2 to 31 for a fun-filled evening of dancing and gemuetlichkeit. Bavarian Grill Haus on Mount Tamborine and Bavarian on Tedder in Main Beach are also dishing up some delicious lebensmittel to fill your belly.

The Bavarian Bier Cafe in Broadbeach is going all out for the month with activities for the whole family to enjoy. Be among the first to try the limited edition Oktoberfest biers from Lowenbrau, Spaten, Hofbräu, Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr and feast on classic Bavarian dishes including roasted pork knuckle, crispy pork belly, haus-made sausages, huge schnitzels and haus-baked strudels. On Thursday October 8, the epic Jägermeister party will return for another year and ladies, if you head in on a Friday dressed in suitable Oktoberfest attire, you’ll receive a complimentary schnapps and $10 cocktails. Lads, (and ladies who can handle their weight in beer) if you’re up for the challenge, taste each of the Oktoberfest biers to receive a complimentary 500mL stein. Bavarian Haus in Surfers Paradise is also hosting its own Oktoberfest party on Saturday October 17. The venue’s top level will be transformed into a little slice of Munich with German tap beers, traditional eats and merriment. Tickets must be bought in advance so you might just want to pop over here to grab yours post haste.

If you’re up for a road-trip, Brisbane hosts Australia’s largest Oktoberfest event on October 9–11 and then again from October 16–18 at Brisbane Showgrounds. Sample the finest German food, taste hand-crafted beers made from 200 year old recipes, enjoy traditional music and entertainment and learn more about German culture and history. Don’t worry if you’re not exactly fluent in German, just practice this phrase “ein bier bitte”, it means one bier please. Prost!
