The round-up: where to get your hot cross bun fix this Easter
Nothing (and we mean nothing) says Easter quite like a tray of deliciously fluffy hot cross buns that are still warm from the oven – of course topped off with a generous schmear of butter. Call us eager, but we went on a little hunt of our own to find the best spots to get your hot cross bun fix across the Gold Coast this year. Enjoy, friends!
Paddock Bakery, Burleigh Heads: Paddock’s iconic woodfired sourdough hot cross buns matched with a thick layer of Pepe Saya butter is truly a culinary gift. This year, the team is slinging two mouth-watering flavours – Paddock’s OG fruit or decadent chocolate. These babies are available in store daily until sold out or pre-order online so you don’t miss out! Sorry, diet.
Burleigh Baker, Burleigh Heads and Paradise Point: When it comes to baked goods on the Gold Coast, Burleigh Baker is always a crowd favourite. The team is once again delighting taste buds with its famed hot cross buns, which are made using a brioche sourdough – not only do they taste fabulous, but they are crafted with gut-friendly digestibility in mind. Online ordering is available now so don’t waste anytime getting your hands on some of these beauties!
Tarte Bakery & Cafe, Burleigh Heads and Tarte Beach House, Currumbin: When it comes to mouth-watering baked goods, hand-made sweet treats and brunch bites, Tarte Bakery & Cafe and its newest sibling spot Tarte Beach House on the banks of Currumbin Creek are never too far from our thoughts. Amongst the assortment of treats you’ll spy some hot cross buns still piping-hot from the oven, but you’d better be quick, they’ve been known to get snapped up fast. This year, Chloe is upping the ante with a hot cross bun croissant scroll, but we’ll have all of the delicious details on this marvellous creation for you next week.
Fuel Bakehouse, Currumbin, Burleigh Heads and Cabarita: Once again, the team at Fuel will be rolling literally thousands of its signature hot cross buns in two delightful flavours – chocolate and traditional fruit (which is also vegan friendly). Preorders are open now, so hop to it!
The Bread Social, Currumbin, Tweed Heads and Harris Farm Markets Isle of Capri: If you love the fresh bread and delicious baked goods served at The Farm Byron Bay, then you’ll be happy to know that the crew responsible for creating the rustic goodies are now dotted across the Gold Coast, with a retail bakery and espresso bar in Tweed Heads, a section at Harris Farm Markets in Isle of Capri as well as their enormous HQ in Currumbin. This year, the bakers are luring carb lovers with three kinds of hot cross bun, traditional, chocolate and what’s known as Glam Chocolate, which is slightly larger than the standard hot cross bun variety and filled with chocolate ganache. Go on, kilojoules don’t count at Easter, that’s just a fact.
Well Bread & Pastry, Palm Beach and Miami: With outposts in Palmy and Miami, Well Bread & Pastry is making it super convenient to get our fix of artisan buns. In true Well Bread style, the hot cross buns are made in the traditional fashion, all hand shaped using all the best locally, sustainability sourced ingredients. Make no mistake, these bad boys are top-tier treats.
5B2F Bakehouse, Chirn Park: For those a little further north, you can’t look past the creations from pastry chef Moonsun Yoo. He has created a milky, soft bun, which is infused with cranberries, raisins and apricots – the fruits are all marinated in port wine first to ensure the buns have depth from first bite to the last. Your hot cross buns are in very good hands here, so grab a six pack (or two) to go.
Bam Bam Bakehouse, Mermaid Beach: When it comes to delightfully decadent, handcrafted pastries, Bam Bam is the master. This year, the team is doling out a huge range of Easter treats including a game-changing Easter Bomb, a larger-than-life hot cross bun filled with custard. There’s also traditional hot cross buns (filled with dried apple), traditional hot cross buns piped with vanilla custard, and chocolate hot cross buns (which come normal or piped with salted caramel). Make an online order at the Bam Bam website.
Cubby Bakehouse, Chinderah: Located right on the Tweed River in Chinderah, Cubby is the southern go-to for all of your favourite baked goods. Cubby’s hot cross buns are light and fluffy, and are available in traditional fruit or chocolate. These goodies are baked fresh daily, so jump in your car stat!
Marie Anita’s, Mermaid Beach: This gluten-free cafe and artisan bakery is well-known for its conscious, organic fare and delicious artisan baked goods and breads. This Easter, the Marie Anita’s team will be baking its hot cross buns fresh daily, which are entirely gluten-free and cane sugar-free. Sit down and enjoy them with a coffee, or pre-order a batch to take home.
Currumbin Fermentary & Bakehouse, Currumbin Waters: Hop to Currumbin Waters for some out-of-this-world hot cross buns from Currumbin Fermentary & Bakehouse. Made fresh on site, these beauties will be available close to Easter for your snacking pleasure!
Franquette, Tamborine Mountain: If you find yourself wandering around Tamborine Mountain with a hankering for a hot cross bun, make haste to Franquette, which will be slinging buns from next week. We’re told there will be traditional fruit buns alongside some egg-stra special creations slathered with Biscoff paste. If you’re really keen to take things next level, Franquette has partnered with Tamborine Mountain Gelato for a special gelato-filled hot cross bun (available at Tamborine Mountain Gelato only).
