When Brendan Hill and Gabrielle Hows first took over the Refinery Coffee site (formerly Nectar Espresso) in Currumbin’s industrial hub two years ago, they had grand plans for the tiny coffee nook. Armed only with a blender, a sandwich press and a few square metres of workable space, they slung coffees, smoothies and cabinet food, while in the background they slowly worked on bringing their masterplan – which involved expanding and creating an entirely new venue – to life. Just before Christmas, Refinery 2.0 was revealed.

While the Refinery name remains, this is an entirely new cafe. A complete rebuild has seen the venue expand into the rest of the warehouse and now incorporates an upstairs seating area – it has more than tripled its original capacity to now seat more than 60 caffeine-loving locals. Blackboard Coffee remains as the bean provider, while a brand-new kitchen allows Refinery to offer an all-day breakfast and lunch menu, served seven days a week. Plus, it’s now licensed, with local tinnies, wines and cider making up the booze list.

The food menu covers all bases – think breakfast dishes like eggs on toast (using sourdough from Panya Bakery, located just across the street), bacon and egg rolls, and gluten-free buckwheat waffles topped with chai-spiced baked apples, mascarpone, honeycomb, lemon balm, spiced-apple syrup and seasonal fruits. For a brunch or lunch-style munch, there’s meat-free bites like roasted field mushrooms with pearl barley, sourdough sauce and fried enoki, and vibrant green bowls loaded with quinoa and brown rice and topped with a chilli-walnut crumb, truffle oil and a poached egg. You can also wrap those mitts of yours around a Refinery burger – a classic cheeseburger with dill pickles and mustard, or a grilled chipotle chicken burger with shaved cucumber and ginger-lime aioli. There’s also a cabinet of cookies and treats, all baked fresh on site for your nibbling pleasure.
