Hello happiness – Ristorante Fellini opens a casual eatery with pizza and all of the cheese

We’re pretty spoilt for choice on the coast when it comes to really great pizza (just take a peek at our recent pizza round-up for proof) but when renowned Italian dining institution Ristorante Fellini at Marina Mirage opens a brand new casual eatery that specialises in traditional Napoli-style pizza, suffice to say we’re very interested.

Taking over the tenancy next door to Ristorante Fellini’s iconic space (previously known as Fellini Pasta Shop), Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar by Fellini dishes up a simplified version of the restaurant’s famed fare. In addition to the pared-back food offering, the team has also tweaked the vibe with some striking murals and communal dining tables, making it more relaxed than its fine-dining counterpart, but with the same million-dollar views. In a first for the coast, the venue also introduces the concept of a Mozzarella Bar, which for the uninitiated isn’t an actual bar, but rather a selection of small plates showcasing Italian and Australian mozzarellas, antipasto meats and ingredients – kind of like a DIY cheese board. These new elements are intended to encourage diners to linger a little longer and enjoy a meal in true Italian style (i.e. loudly and with plenty of wine).

At the heart of Pizzeria and Mozzarella Bar by Fellini is a colossal two-metre wide woodfire oven, which has been imported from Italy and churns out perfectly crispy pizzas that are made the traditional Neapolitan way using dough that is left to rest for 24 hours, hand-stretched and stone-baked. The pasta menu offers simplified versions of Fellini faves but instead of a bowl, it’s served inside a pizza crust so once you’re done eating the innards you can scoop up the remaining sauce with the crust – brilliant! Lovers of a cheeky tipple will also be excited to know that the sensational wine and cocktail offering from Fellini has been replicated.
