Feast on some of the hinterland’s freshest picnic fare from Picnic at North Stores

Say hello to your newest roadtrip destination – North Stores is a delightfully drool-worthy picnic spot and collection of conscious spaces that’s tucked up in the heart of Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast hinterland. Don’t worry about packing lunch – Picnic at North Stores is boxing up the freshest fare to be enjoyed wherever you please. The only hard work you’ll have to do is choose what to eat!

When you’re situated amongst some of our state’s most incredible produce, you want to be devouring it. Enter Picnic – the brainchild of Brenda Fawdon and Sonja Drexler (ex-owners of Mondo Organics in Brisbane’s West End) – a quaint eatery serving up coffee, sweet treats and nourishing lunch options made from the freshest local and seasonal produce. Picnic offers dine in, take-home and takeaway food including, as its name might suggest, a range of brimming picnic boxes. Select your carefully curated box and whisk it away for a picnic under the trees, while you take in the views from the mountain. As the menu is seasonal, the ever-changing selection is fresh and utilises the best local produce available for your al fresco feasting. Whether you choose to sit on the deck at North Stores, or take away a picnic box and throw out a rug for an afternoon of relaxing, either way promises to be a delightful afternoon.

Including house-baked pastries and freshly prepared salads, the autumn menu features delicacies like the breakfast carrot cake with date cashew cream and toasted walnuts and the toasted sourdough ciabatta loaded with Swiss brown mushrooms, sweet potato, spinach, chickpeas and miso butter. The salad selection includes a purple slaw with golden beetroot, baby spinach, radish, roasted walnuts and cashew mayo, and a drool-worthy combination of charred zucchini, cherry tomatoes, green beans, black beans, garden leaves and a Green Goddess dressing. If you’re after something to accompany your picnic, choose from coffee from boutique micro-roastery Ruben Hills, organic tea from Mayde Tea, the much-loved Balter XPA, Eigth Day local cider and a selection of natural Australian wines, plus Buchi kombucha on tap. Picnic also hosts special pop-up events – keep an eye on its Instagram page for the likes of Sunday sundown barbecues or Friday night cook-ups under the stars.
