Baos, bowls and laksa lasagne – Fu Manchu Oriental unveils a tantalising new menu

Fu Manchu Oriental on Thomas Drive has been igniting culinary curiosity in diners since it opened in 2016. A lot has happened since then, including a shuffle in ownership that saw the venue's original co-founder Zuraya Hamilton step back into the fray and a substantial two-level renovation that was unveiled in 2019. Having only reopened six months prior to the global pandemic, Zuraya was forced to pivot, and fast. Now, the Chevron Island eatery has come of age and delivered its most creative menu yet. more

Pavement Whisper: Apres Surf is set to bring its brand of unpretentious brews and bites to Burleigh Heads

Those who have been kicking around the coast for a hot minute and fancy a frothy are likely to have fond (hazy) memories that involve Apres Surf. The down-to-Earth watering hole – nestled between a massage parlour and an Asian grocer in Mermaid Beach – found a loyal following of folk thanks to its refreshingly unpretentious approach to brews and bites. Unfortunately, the neighbourhood locale became a casualty of the development wave that is currently surging across the Gold Coast with the entire block set to be transformed into apartments. The Apres story, however, does not end there. We're stoked to reveal that Apres Surf is set to return in a brand-new Burleigh Heads location oh-so soon. Here's everything you need to know about Apres 2.0 ... more

While we can't head across the border for a long lunch just yet, take a peek inside the brand-new (but old) venue for when we can day-trip to Northern New South Wales. more

Happiness in a can – Mr Black unveils a ready-to-drink espresso martini

RTDs, or ready-to-drink beverages, generally get a pretty bad wrap. Mostly sickly sweet or too basic, they rarely taste anything like the analogue version they are supposed to. Until now. After three (long) years of research and development, the legendary Mr Black Espresso Martini team has unveiled a 200-ml can to shake up and enjoy anywhere. Made using top-grade arabica coffee, pure Australian vodka, and a generous splash of Mr Black Coffee Liqueur (obviously), the new ready-to-drink offering means you never have to endure a mediocre espresso martini ever again. We'll cheers to that. more

Five delicious strawberry recipes to help support strawberry farmers

In case you've missed the news, Australian strawberry farmers are doing it tough right now. Due to lockdowns and cafe closures across the country, the Queensland Strawberry Growers' Association has estimated that there has been an approximately 50-percent reduction in strawberry demand in what would usually be the peak of the season. You may have noticed that the price of strawberries is super low at the supermarket – which is great for the buyer – but this low punnet price is less than the cost for farmers to grow and harvest them. This means that a number of farmers have already started spraying out and killing off fields upon fields of ripe, juicy strawberries so that they don't end up producing punnets at a loss. Australian strawberry growers have sent out a plea, asking us to go out and buy as many strawberries as we can to show our support. Stocking up on deliciously sweet… more

Sink your teeth into pizza and pasta at Varsity Lakes’ brand-new bistro Oscar Italia

Keeping occupied during various COVID-related lockdowns has manifested in some pretty unlikely hobbies to pass time (focaccia, anyone?). For Leisa and her husband Shaun, who found themselves separated by border closures for nine long months, they passed the time apart by planning a restaurant they hoped to open one day. As it turns out, they were pretty good at it – so when the restrictions lifted and the pair were (finally) reunited, they had all of the necessary building blocks in place to turn their hypothetical plans into a reality. The only thing that was missing was the perfect location, and as luck would have it, the perfect place was right in front of their eyes. Varsity Lakes, say hello to Oscar Italia ... more
