Sweet saviour – beachside dessert bar Oh My Waffle opens in Burleigh Heads
Some call them pancakes with abs, Netflix bingers only refer to them as Eggos, others know them as Donkey from Shrek’s favourite breakfast. Yes, we’re talking about waffles. Have them plain, smother them in maple syrup or dress them up with ice-cream – either way, waffles are life and Burleigh’s first boutique dessert bar Oh My Waffle agrees.
Take this is as your first and only warning – this joint is diet busting. Got it? So when you first walk into Oh My Waffle you’ll be hit with a mesmerising aroma – it’s an enchanting combination of chocolate, icing sugar, marshmallows and ice-cream, balanced out with the smell of simmering butter. We reckon Oh My Waffle owners Jessican Hannagan and Courtney Molloy-Havill could bottle that aroma up and sell it as a scented body spray because we would totally buy it … in bulk. The duo’s new specialty dessert bar is located beneath the Ambience tower in Burleigh Heads in the space formerly occupied by a 24-hour gym (yes, we too had a jovial chuckle), and is designed to satisfy even the most indulgent sweet tooths among us.
Golden waffles are the hero here and come in a sweet series of flavour combinations like the Alice in Waffleland topped with crushed Oreos, Oreo cream and ice-cream, and the Blame It On The Berry smothered with mixed berries, custard and ice-cream. Don’t do animal products? No sweat – there are coconut ice-cream topped vegan waffles, too. The menu also features a bunch of crazy shakes like the Mr Shaketastic – a peanut butter milkshake topped with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, peanut butter cups and Malteasers. Though our love of both Whitney Houston and pretzels draws us straight to the I Wanna Shake With Somebody, which is rimmed with caramel popcorn and topped with a salted-caramel crunch. Coffee is the most savoury item on the menu, or you can ditch the caffeine for a loaded hot chocolate. Just so you’re aware, there’s cake-batter hot chocolate topped with red-velvet cake crumbs, whipped cream and a cream-cheese frosting on the menu … and you need it in your life.
