Grocer & Grind opens the Gold Coast’s first superfood cocktail bar

When news first dropped that the talented folk at Grocer & Grind were merging their superfoods ethos with cocktails, you all went completely nuts. Well, dear friends, it’s time to get excited because the wait is finally over. The Gold Coast’s first superfood cocktail bar, NXT Door, will open this Friday December 16.

NXT Door, located (as the name suggests) next door to Grocer & Grind, gives a sunset twist to the popular wholefood goodness of its older sibling, featuring an impressive line-up of healthy superfood cocktails alongside an adventurous menu dotted with fresh and colourful bar eats, share plates and street food. We know the term ‘healthy cocktails’ is thrown around a fair bit lately, but we can tell you that everything behind NXT Door’s cement-topped bar has a genuine, well-curated healthy spin. Now, we’re certainly not giving you a green light to go and down eight cocktails, but there are prominent superfood elements in every single cocktail and dish NXT Door serves. Instead of sugar-laden mix-ins, you’ll find cocktail bases like turmeric, coconut oil, activated chia seeds, ginger, charcoal, coconut water and cold-pressed juices. The wines are organic, vegan and sustainably produced, and the beers are local and totally chemical-free. So, if you enjoy a wine or cocktail of a nighttime, but also give a damn about what goes down your hatch, then NXT Door is your new best friend.

The menu, which will develop seasonally, caters for pretty much all of the dietary groups imaginable – from gluten-, dairy- and nut-free to vegan and paleo. You’ll find smaller eats like ginger-marinated olives with paprika and turmeric, sweet potato chips with aioli and black charcoal salt, plus a series of vibrant protein-topped salads. There are street-style tacos with a choice of pork, haloumi or a vegan option, served atop gluten-free tortillas, coleslaw, guacamole pico de galo and tahini turmeric dressing. A bar isn’t complete without a pizza – and NXT’s pizza is prepared on a gluten-free base and topped with either lamb, paprika chicken or meat-free with cashew cream cheese, spinach, caramelised onions, zucchini, wild mushrooms and olives. Keep it raw and sweet to finish with an affogato of coconut ice-cream, an organic coffee shot and nip of something from behind the bar – your choice. Though, the theatrics of the coconut flour crepe flambé is pretty hard to pass by. NXT Door’s refined fit-out perfectly combines industrial style with elements of greenery, highlighted by iron-clad and timber-topped high tables and hanging pendant lights that create a sultry feel come sundown. The bar is defined by timber planks that have been blackened with flames to create a pretty impressive charcoal effect – and what goes on behind there is pretty magical.
