House of Brews owners splash $1million on recreating Nonna’s eatery

Gold Coast restaurateurs Damien and Sacha Kanaghines don’t do things in halves. The brothers and House of Brews owners have just poured in a million smackers to transform the first venue they opened 11 years ago – Nonna’s at Harbour Town. So, what does $1million get you these days? A pretty rad New York-style fit-out (with a dash of LA vibe), a state-of-the-art kitchen, a custom-made 2.2 tonne Italian pizza oven and an eccentric new menu. We’ll put it simply – this is comfort food heaven.

Following a whirlwind foodie trip around America, the brothers spent the dough as part of a massive transformation of the iconic northern Gold Coast eatery – and they brought the best bits of the American culinary scene back with them. So, when we say comfort food heaven – we mean it. We’re talking metre-long pizzas, American-style cheeseburgers, giant salads in fried tortilla bowls, New York-style club sandwiches, saucy ribs, flame-grilled wagyu rumps and – wait for it – the mind-blowing ‘insane shakes’, which are basically gigantic milkshakes brimming with every decadent morsel you can possibly imagine. These super-sweet shakes, which are just as insane as the name suggests, are inspired by New York’s unbelievably popular Black Tap venues.

Made popular at its sibling venue House of Brews, Nonna’s has also introduced the impressive three-foot high cotton candy tower on its dessert menu. Alongside its deliciously elaborate eats and sweet drinkables, the new Nonna’s also offers a separate gluten-free menu and serves up breakfast daily, with mini and monster-sized creations. You can start your day with breakfast sliders or go all-out with Nonnas’s Epic Breakfast Burger with scrambled eggs, grilled pork belly, melted swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms and hollandaise sauce. The New York-style exposed brick wall interior, met with iron-clad street-style lighting and hanging greenery, is highlighted by Nonna’s open-view glass-wrapped kitchen – so you can see your steak searing and watch your pizza bubbling away from afar. Don the stretchy pants, friends – this is all-time.
