Nineteen Orchid Avenue opens in Surfers Paradise
Inspired by secret drinking dens and speakeasies of days past, Nineteen Orchid Avenue is the Gold Coast’s newest clandestine bar. Don’t be perturbed by a lack of signage or the tailor shop facade, that’s all part of the jig.
If you’re searching for a sign, you may as well keep walking because there are none to be found. Instead, look for the sharp-dressed individual standing streetside that looks decidedly out of place in Surfers Paradise cicra 2015, he’s your guy. The sharp-dressed gent (or lady) will usher you down the alleyway beside House of Brews and you’ll be greeted with a window display filled with Singer sewing machines, vintage patterns and suits reminiscent of the days when people would gather in their Sunday best and listen to Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong and Sideny Bechet on vinyl. Proceed through the heavy doors and you’ll discover a moodily lit establishment embellished with peculiar oddities including a bath, for no particular reason, and a bar that is plentifully stocked with top-shelf liquor including the likes of Sullivans Cove French Oak whisky.
Perched on a shelf, a Hendrick’s gin porcelain pot reads “it’s not for everyone,” which could very well be the mantra for Nineteen Orchid Avenue. The sophisticated venue by Nathan Innes has raised the bar for Surfers Paradise and is aimed at the 25-plus demographic. Be entertained by live music from Ray Keepance or DJ Freddy Flyfingarz on the decks or just sink into a couch with a cocktail and converse with fellow patrons. Rather than your standard selection of swills, Nineteen Orchid prefers something a little more bespoke. Tell the barkeep your flavour preference and they’ll create something personal and record it in their little black book under your name so that next time, and there will very likely be a next time, you can have one of the same.
